China’s Tariff Leniency Supports Talks And U.S. Automakers

The Chinese government will continue to suspend additional duties on U.S. automotive exports – applied in retaliation for U.S. section 301 duties but suspended in December –  to ensure “a good atmosphere for the ongoing trade negotiations”. China imported $8.76 billion of vehicles and auto components from the U.S. in 2018. The suspension of duties likely helped exporters of vehicles – including BMW, Daimler and Ford – more than components manufacturers. ​​​​​​​Shipments of completed vehicles climbed 63.9% in January compared to the 4Q average while exports of components dropped by 44.6%....
