It looks likely that the Global Forum on Steel Overcapacity will struggle to make progress after its first meeting on Friday. A disagreement over figures may be the start. Panjiva data shows that while Chinese exports of steel fell in 15 of the past 18 months, including a 56% drop in July exports by value to the U.S., exports of some products jumped by as much as 21% in July. U.S. data for August shows a 10% jump in global steel imports, including a 5% increase from China. The EU may be the villain of the piece though – exports to the U.S. from there jumped 35% in August.
