U.S. automotive sales climbed 111.4% year over year in April, or by 14.0% when compared to April 2019 as demand continued to expand after the pandemic. Yet, on a daily average basis sales were 2.3% lower than in March, potentially linked to falling availability caused by a shortage of semiconductors. General Motors has indicated that production cuts linked to the lack of chips will be extended and that “Q2 will be the weakest quarter of the year” according to CFO Paul Jacobson.
