Hanjin Shipping may sell half its vessels according to the Wall Street Journal. It is worth noting that it owns 37 of the 88 vessels it operates, with the rest chartered. The latter will likely be returned to owners according to Bloomberg. Around a third of its owned vessels are over seven years old, and 42% by volume are under 8,000 TEU. Panjiva data indicates that, for U.S. bound routes, Hanjin’s owned vessels have carried 20% more volumes in the three months to August 31. Chartered vessels carried 14% less, which may simply reflect global routing decisions.
