King Coal’s Reign Returning as Export Orders Start To Flow

U.S. coal exports are experiencing something of a renaissance. Following President Trump’s Executive Order calling for increased exports in March 2017, a series of export agreements have been signed. The most recent is a one million tons per year sale to Japan by Cloud Peak. Total exports of thermal coal have climbed 131% in the 12 months to November 30 on a year earlier, though that is still 28% below 2012’s peaks.
