Hanjin Shipping’s move into administration comes as its volumes shipped are already falling – down 12.1% in the first half of August according to Panjiva data for U.S.-bound shipments. It is also facing operational disruptions. The next step may be consolidation with Hyundai Merchant Marine. A combined group could have 5.4% of capacity globally, based on Alphaliner data, and 4.7% of U.S. imports, Panjiva data shows. A knock-on effect would be expansion of the 2M alliance to a similar scale as the Ocean Alliance. Arguably though capacity needs to be closed, rather than just consolidated.<...
