The container shipping firms are starting to restructure their services following prolonged network congestion. Maersk and MSC (the 2M shipping alliance) are restructuring their “pendulum” services which alternate between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to “improve schedule reliability in the Asia-Europe network”. They are also adding a replacement, dedicated Transpacific service. The latter is understandable given the surge in demand, with shipments into U.S. west coast ports handled by the two container lines having increased by 82.7% year over year in January and February combined....
