Nehru’s New Terminal May Be Undermined by Modi’s New Tariffs

The fourth terminal at Mumbai’s main port (Jawaharlal Nehru Port) started operations in February, and could eventually add 4.8 million TEUs to capacity. Container handling at the port expanded by 4.3% in 2017 vs. 2016 following an acceleration of 48% at the most recently inaugurated terminal facilities. Preliminary data for January suggests growth may be accelerating, with a 10% expansion on a year earlier to set a new one month record of 418,406 TEUs.
