North American supply chains may face restricted trucking capacity in 2018 according to an Averitt Express survey. Rising driver costs are already taking a bite out of freight forwarders’ margins, as seen for JB Hunt. A failure of NAFTA talks would also make trucking more complex on a cross-border basis. A decline in shipments by rail from Mexico to the U.S. could provide capacity to take some trucking capacity out. Mexican exports by rail fell 13% in the 12 months to November 30, whereas shipments by truck improved by 1%.
