SM Group’s Chairman, Woo Oh-heun, has stated a willingness to acquire foreign shippers in order to achieve its target of around $3 billion of revenues in the next five years. Mr. Woo faces a number of challenges in doing so. Other shippers, including CMA-CGM and Maersk, have also stated they may look for acquisitions. The container-line space is already heavily consolidated. There are only six quoted container shippers with revenues under $3 billion, and of those only three (Wan Hai, Seaspan and Ship Finance) do not have a majority or state shareholder.
