Soaring Imports May Lead Modi to Double Down on “Make in India” Tariffs

India’s international trade boom continued for a 26th month in October after a 17.7% surge in imports and exports combined. Exports grew faster than imports for the first time in three months at 17.9%, though that was down to oil products and petrochemicals in large part. The bigger issue for the government may be the sustained growth in imports of electronics. That doesn’t necessarily mean the “Make in India” industrial tariff policy isn’t working though.
