Solar and Washer Tariffs Perform (Almost, But Not Entirely) As Expected

Nearly two months on from the U.S. decision to apply tariffs on washing machines and solar panels under the section 201 review, the initial effects on trade can be seen. Firstly, imports of both products have dropped markedly, with seaborne imports of washers fell 80% in February vs. the December peak and while solar panels are down by 69%. Solar panel imports are only 55% below their 2015 average level though, and imports from suppliers in Mexico have ticked up. That suggests both that not all suppliers have been squeezed out.
