Trump touts on-track China farm sales, but other products have gone off-road

The U.S. Trade Representative has published a report that shows China has already completed 71% of its farm goods commitments under the phase 1 trade deal. That shouldn’t be a surprise given farm goods imports were 71.1% higher in the month of August than the same period for 2017 though the USTR data includes forward sales as well. The timing of the report is likely part of the Trump administration’s re-election campaign.
