Boston Pays The Price for MSC’s Rapid Route Realignment

Container-line MSC is updating its Mediterranean-U.S. service to cut shipping times by as much as four days. That comes at the cost of cutting Boston from the route. Panjiva data shows MSC was the largest carrier of European container freight to Boston in 2017 with 62,175 TEUs, which was 28% lower than in 2016. Volumes shipped from ports in Italy, Portugal and Spain accounted for 27% of MSC’s shipments to Boston last year. Yet, at 12% of Boston’s total handling the loss of the route is a disappointment rather than a disaster.
