The European Commission has called for comments on its review of the container-lines’ block exemption from antitrust reviews which is due to lapse in 2020. There will be some controversy involved given the ESC’s complaint about recent, closely-timed rate increases regarding bunker fuel prices. Those have pushed China-Europe rates up 10% from their recent trough. Yet the process of consolidation among the container-lines since the last review took effect from 2015 may be a bigger concern.
