EU coronavirus strategy may wash away soap exports

The European Commission has launched a coronavirus initiative including travel restrictions and limits on exports of key medical supplies outside the EU. Corporations in the EU are also reviewing their supply chains with LVMH and Pernod Ricard repurposing their perfume and alcohol production to make hand sanitizer and its precursors. EU-27 exports of soap and perfumes were worth 12.94 billion euros ($14.21 billion) in the 12 months to Nov. 30 with 18.6% headed to the U.K. and 12.0% to the U.S. The EU-27 represented 55.8% of U.S. imports of soaps and perfumes in 2019.
