Union Pacific is applying a surcharge to rail shipments from the port of Seattle in certain conditions as it attempts to manage demand for equipment in southern California in the face of a surge in shipments. Total traffic handled by the ports of Seattle and Tacoma has only recently recovered from the COVID-19 related downturn, with U.S. seaborne imports to the ports up by 11.0% year over year in the first half of August.
