Hanjin’s Big Boats no Big Deal for U.S.-Bound Routes

As Hanjin Shipping heads towards the end of its first month of administration, several buyers for assets are being considered. The Wall Street Journal points to Hyundai Merchant Marine as a buyer for the five largest vessels. This would leave 209,000 TEUs of capacity to sell or scrap, less than 1% of global capacity. The ‘big 5’ haven’t been used on U.S.-bound routes – notably though Hanjin Shipping appears to have used its own, rather than chartered, vessels on the Panama Canal-type routes.
