The Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs will apply tariffs of $245 to $452 per ton on Chinese exports of tires for buses and trucks, Economic Times reports, following earlier recommendations from the Department of Commerce. The government has a further 36 ongoing investigations regarding Chinese exports.
Panjiva’s new Indian trade data shows China accounted for 87.1% of Indian imports of the products concerned in the past 12 months. The case is having some impact – shipments from China fell 42.5% in the month of July and 55.1% in the three months to July 31 vs. a year earlier. There have been increases in shipments from Japan (53.8% higher) and Thailand (7.3%), though in aggregate they were just 6.0% of supplies in the past year.

Chinese manufacturers have faced similar cases in the European Union, as outlined in Panjiva research of August 11, and the United States. As a result exports fell 6.9% annually over the past three years, despite a rebound of 5.4% in the past quarter on a year earlier. That has left manufacturers looking for alternative markets, and possibly alternative routes to market as s 41.8% surge in shipments to Canada in the past quarter suggests.
