Remy Cointreau’s Brandy Hopes for China Face Pre-Congress Austerity Risk

China 2979 Consumer Staples 764 Earnings 730

Brandy-maker Remy Cointreau beat analysts’ forecasts for full year profits by 7%, citing higher sales to China as a major driver. Panjiva data shows Chinese imports of brandy increased 10% in the 12 months to April 30 on a year earlier. However, there was a 22% drop in the month of April, perhaps suggesting a return to austerity ahead of the National Congress due in the fall. Tequila-type spirits have grown faster, with a 26% rise in the past 12 months taking imports of all spirits to an 11% growth rate.
