Smartphone maker Samsung Electronics provided guidance that its earnings would be 9% better than analysts were expecting. Phone sales may not have been a significant driver of this. U.S. imports of handsets from South Korea and Vietnam combined, a proxy for Samsung’s factories, were 7% lower than a year earlier in May, and 16% lower for the past three months.
