The opportunity for extra exports by U.S. poultry farmers due to bird flu in Asia has turned into a risk after Tyson Foods discovered H7 bird flu in Tennessee. That has led South Korea to ban shipments from the U.S. Panjiva data shows the country accounted for less than 1% of U.S. exports of live and processed chicken in 2016. The 16% growth in global exports the industry saw last year included a 36% jump in shipments to Hong Kong. Should other Asian states follow South Korea’s lead then exporters including Mountaire and JBS have a lot more to lose.
