Duty Dispute Casts Cloud Over Indian Solar Growth

Energy - Renewables 182 India 512

Around 900 containers of solar panels have been delayed at India’s Chennai port due to a dispute as to whether the shipments are indeed panels (and therefore zero duty paid) or motor parts. Local authorities contend many of the contents can be used in other systems, and so should be taxed at 7.5%. The hold-up has run for a month so far. It may lead to a slowdown in India’s renewable energy growth. Imports year-to-date at September climbed 158% on a year earlier, while in September alone they climbed 98% to reach $230 million.
