Storm in a Galvanized Tea Cup, or Broader Trade Squall?

The New Zealand government is making a relatively rare trade investigation, focussed on Chinese exports of galvanized steel. Panjiva data shows exports of the product group more broadly were just $2 million over the past 12 months, representing only 16% of New Zealand imports and 0.05% of Chinese exports. Chinese objections to the deal may therefore be more about positioning around broader trade deals than the specifics of steel.
