Big Isn’t Beautiful as China Port Throughput Rises 7%

China 2979 Corp - Ports 884 Logistics 476 Mode - Containerized 1475 Mode - Seaborne 1806 U.S. 5325

Chinese ports’ container throughput increased 7% in August, according to official figures. Number one port Shanghai grew by 5% but number two Shenzhen handled 1% less. A similar pattern can be see with traffic to the U.S., where volumes increased 5% based on Panjiva data. Hong Kong continues to face a long-term decline, with U.S.-bound goods from China falling 7.5%, while Qingdao-Liuting handled 20% more traffic. This may reflect strength in the autos industry, while weaker toy imports may explain Ningbo’s 5% contraction.
