Mexico Starts Safeguard Steps As Steel Shipments Surge

The Mexican government has reimposed steel duties of 15% on imports from non-free trade agreement countries. While those have been sporadically applied in the past they are another sign of the prevalence of steel safeguarding tariffs as a response to America’s section 232 duties. Mexico’s steel imports from non-FTA countries increased 23.0% year over year a 23.0% to reach $7.47 billion in 2018.
