Panama Partly a Victim of Its Own Successful Upgrade

The Panama Canal experienced 13% fewer transits in August than a year ago. A 22% drop in mid-sized vessels suggests shippers are using neo-Panamax vessels to displace Panamaxes on the route – i.e. Panama is partly cannibalizing itself. Nonetheless, TEUs shipped could have increased 3%, and Panjiva data suggests Californian ports have lost 100 basis points of market share to southeast ports in the past three months from key Asian suppliers.
