Transits of the Panama Canal fell 5% in April vs. March, but increased 7% on a year earlier. The largest number of Neopanamax vessels traversed the Canal since its expansion, resulting in a 51% growth in volumes. That outpaced the 12% drop for the Suez Canal. However, it comes ahead of a 10 day interruption on eastbound locks for the Panama Canal in May. The longer-term impact on Asia-U.S. traffic of the Canal’s extension has stabilized.
