Container handling through the port of Savannah increased by 12% on a year earlier in April, the sixth straight month of growth. That was partly due to empty container shipping however, without which growth was 9%. The expansion was driven by a 29% rise in imports from China, Panjiva data shows. Imports of full containers therefore climbed 15%, well above the 3% growth in exports, repeating a pattern seen nationally. The port outperformed those in Virginia, which expanded by just 5% in the first month of operation of the East Coast Gateway Terminal Agreement.
