The import of drugs known as statins, used to reduce cardiovascular disease risks, has grown significantly. Panjiva data shows a 9% rise in U.S. seaborne imports of the drugs in the 12 months to September 30 on a year earlier, and an 18% annualized growth over the past eight years. In September alone there was a 20% increase on a year earlier, driven by new, generic versions of AstraZeneca’s Crestor. The largest exporter of generic statin drugs to the U.S. is Teva.
