Sugar Suspension Deal Hurts U.S. Imports, Mexican Exports Unchanged

The sugar suspension agreement between the U.S. and Mexico is not working the way it is meant to, a preliminary Commerce Department review has found. U.S. buyers have experienced a 35% fall in imports in the third quarter on a year earlier, Panjiva data shows. Yet, Mexican exports to all countries are unchanged on a year earlier over the past 12 months. Exporters, including Empresas Santos and Melchor Ocampo, reduced their dependence on the U.S. in October to the lowest since January 2015.
