The Top U.S. Ports in 2018 – LA Holds Its Crown While New York Plays The Usurper

U.S. seaports had a bumper year in 2018 with a 7.8% year over year growth in seaborne shipments to reach a record 28.9 million TEUs. LA and Long Beach retained their crowns as the top two ports with a combined 32.5% of all inbound traffic. New York nearly caught Long Beach though after a 12.8% increase in traffic that was supported by investments in bridge raising and handling equipment. Investments in capacity also helped Savannah, fourth placed with 10.8% growth, take market share from both Norfolk and Charleston.
