China’s rising railfreight exports are putting a lot of pressure on European railyard capacity. Unloading delays of up to a week are being reported, which largely obviates the time advantage of rail over seafreight in shipping from China to Europe. Panjiva data shows Chinese exports by rail climbed 56% in value terms on a year earlier in the second quarter. That was the result of a 105% jump in shipments to the EU, including markets such as the U.K. that are well to the west of traditional German and Polish unloading points.
