California Checks In More Cargoes, But It Sees Fewer Leave

Container handling in California’s three main ports increased 11% on a year earlier in April, Panjiva analysis of port data shows. Long Beach outpaced Los Angeles for the first time since June 2016 after grabbing a larger share of Asian imports. It lagged in exports, however. Oakland fell behind both as handling there increased by just 4%. Taken together the three ports’ import volumes increased 11% while exports rose by 5%. If repeated nationally that suggests room for a significant jump in the trade deficit.
