Canada Can’t Afford to Leave Without New U.S. Lumber Deal

Ags - Forestry 124 Canada 495 Tariffs 1799 Trade Deals 1000 U.S. 5323

Time is running short for a revised softwood lumber deal between the U.S. and Canada, with a deadline of October 12 before trade cases can start. A deal matters to Canada – exports increased C$155 million in August compared to a year earlier vs. global exports that fell by C$1.13 billion. U.S. imports increased 42% in July, and after a pause in August grew 52% in September. With housing starts unchanged Canadian exporters are clearly beating their U.S. counterparts. Tolko has been most aggressive at growing shipments, followed by West Fraser and Interfor.
