Good Month Baltimore – Container Handling Hits New High as European Traffic Surges

Corp - Ports 884 Mode - Containerized 1475 Mode - Seaborne 1806 U.S. 5325

Container handling by the Maryland Port Administration in Baltimore climbed 12% on a year earlier to reach a new record of 88,383 TEUs in August. That was the sixth straight month of growth, and was driven by imports which grew by more than exports (13% vs. 1%) – a pattern seen across the nation. Imports from Europe drove the growth, having risen 22%. The diversion of Asian traffic due to the widening of the Panama Canal has passed Baltimore by. In the past year shipments from China increased by just 2% and those from the rest of Asia fell by 8%.
