Hyundai MM Goes Large(r), May Need Closer Alliance Deals as Well as Vessels

Hyundai Merchant Marine plans to invest in new 22,000 TEU vessels, and while there are no specifics on the number of vessels it is being driven by a “national expectation for being a leading shipping nation”. The investments would follow a significant capital increase and the creation of the Korea Shipping Partnership (KSP) earlier this year. Hyundai MM currently charters 71% of its capacity, with the 12 vessels it owns averaging 8,800 TEUs. With an orderbook of just 22,000 TEUs currently it may have plans for significant growth.
