KORUS Future Uncertain After Moon-Trump Meet, But Surplus Down 35%

Meetings between President Moon and President Trump left uncertainty about the future of the KORUS trade deal. President Trump referred to a “new trade deal” being negotiated, while the joint statement did not make specific reference to trade deals. The next move will likely only come once the U.S. “performance review” of trade deals is complete in October. In the meantime South Korea’s trade surplus with the U.S. dropped 35% in the 12 months to June 30 vs. its peak in April 2015.
