Malmstrom Threatens Steel Retaliation as EU Exports to U.S. Recover

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom has warned that the U.S. “section 232” review of the steel industry could attract retaliation should significant new trade barriers be erected. Panjiva data shows steel exports to the U.S. from the EU have increased by 15% in the past quarter on a year earlier. That lags the U.S. total of a 44% rise. Panjiva analysis of 240 products shows the EU’s largest exposure – in terms of larger products where the EU has a high market share – lay in flat-rolled, tin-coated plate steel, ferrochrome and stainless steel rod.
