Mexican Trade Success Heighten NAFTA Talks Tension Risk

Mexico 885 Trade Balance 932 U.S. 5323 USMCA 456

Mexico’s exports climbed 11% on a year earlier in June, the eighth straight month of growth. That resulted in a $62 million trade surplus vs. the deficit expected by economists. The expansion in the trade balance was the result of trade with the U.S. The surplus reached $12.8 billion, the highest since at least 2011 after export growth outstripped imports by 2% points. That will prove politically inconvenient ahead of NAFTA talks that start August 16 – America’s main aim is to cut the Mexican trade surplus with it.
