DP World has formally opened a 59% expansion to the capacity of its Port of Prince Rupert facility in Canada. The port, which ran at 87% of capacity in 2016, has experienced steady growth. Handling saw a 12% annualized growth in the 12 months to July 31 on three years earlier and 23% in the past quarter. That makes it one of the fastest growing ports in North America, and outpaced northwest U.S. ports. Seattle and Tacoma experienced a 1% decline in incoming traffic over the past three years, in part due to a loss of market share in the past year to other regional ports.
