Slowing Exports Could Bring Higher U.S. Deficit Ahead of China, NAFTA Deals

U.S. trade growth may be slowing. Panjiva analysis of exports from seven major ports shows outbound container handling increased by just 0.3% on a year earlier, due to a slowdown at Long Beach. That was the slowest rate of growth since a small contraction in June 2016. Export price inflation meanwhile slowed to 1.4%. It would take a marked recovery in other transport modes – which have fallen in 11 of the past 12 months – for export growth to beat 2%.
