Suez Swamped by Shippers’ Panama Push

The extension of the Panama Canal is proving to be increasingly successful. Transits increased 1% on a year earlier despite the shorter month and reduced traffic from Asia. On a capacity-adjusted basis handling increased 43%, far outstripping the Suez Canal’s 15% drop. Bookings for neopanamax slots by shippers also reached 88% of availability, the highest yet. The Canal is also having the desired impact on U.S. traffic. Southeast and northeast ports increased their share of Asian incoming traffic to 34.3% from 32.7% a year earlier, Panjiva data shows.
