Taiwan’s Export Spurt Continues as Long as Chinese Imports Stay Strong

China 2977 Taiwan 209 Trade Balance 932 U.S. 5323

Taiwan’s exports climbed 9% on a year earlier in April, the seventh straight month of growth but slightly below expectations. Electronics was the main growth driver, including a 35% jump in memory chip shipments. China and Asia-ex-China contributed equally to growth. That leaves Taiwan highly exposed to slowing – but still positive – Chinese business sentiment. Improved U.S. relations may boost export growth, but at 11% of total exports it will hardly be transformative.
