Today’s Imports Are Tomorrow’s Discounts As Auto Sales Slump

Inventories of imported cars and trucks in the U.S. may be building up after sales of imported vehicles fell 4% in April. That led the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for all models (including domestic) to fall 3.7% to 16.8 million. That was 2% below analysts’ expectations, the third straight month of disappointments. Panjiva data shows seaborne imports climbed 16% in April (based on 27 days of data), with imports from the EU climbing 26%. That was the fastest rate of expansion since May 2015.
