The U.S. State Department has approved a $5.2 billion sale of military jets and systems to Canada. That comes as the government looks to cut the trade deficit with Canada via NAFTA negotiations, and against the backdrop of wrangling over Canada’s support for commercial jets. The order means approvals for military exports are 73% higher than a year earlier. That may help arrest the decline in arms exports. U.S. exports of military jets, vehicles and weapons were $10.2 billion in the 12 months to July 31, down 10% from calendar 2016.
