Hapag-Lloyd, Indian Auto-parts Allow Norfolk to Grow Even as China’s Volumes Stagnate

Container handling in Virginia, including Norfolk, snapped a three month downtrend to rise 8% in July vs. a year earlier with imports and exports growing at a similar rate. Import growth of 10% outpaced the national average of 6% despite volumes from China being unchanged on a year earlier. The latter may be the result of a loss of market share to Savannah though with just 31% of shipments coming to Norfolk from China the downside risk from the Trump administration’s widening tariffs is less than average.
