Maersk has imposed a new set of $50 per container storage charges at U.S. ports, adding to early-pull fees of as much as $360 at Miami earlier this month. Shipping costs from North Asia to the U.S. east coast have climbed to $4,500 per FEU in mid-October from $2,700 in early June. The container-lines’ ability to raise rates and add surcharges is driven by rapidly increasing shipping volumes in the wake of pandemic lockdowns ending.
